What is a Transmission Flush?

A transmission flush is performed to ensure the transmission system operates smoothly. Over time the transmission begins to generate more friction and heat which causes the fluid to collect foreign particles that start to interfere with its functions such as shifting and accelerating. Eventually this collection of foreign particles turns into sludge.

Flushing the transmission is part of a vehicle’s maintenance schedule that involves removing the old transmission fluid, debris and sludge from a vehicle’s transmission and replacing it with new

fluid with the purpose of cooling and lubricating your automatic transmission. The process usually involves a machine that’s connected to the transmission fluid lines and uses pressure to circulate and remove the old fluid. Some services include additives to break down deposits within the transmission. New fluid is then pumped in to replace the old fluid. After that the technician inspects the fluid and system checking for leaks and tests for proper operation post flush.

Performing a transmission flush helps to maximize the performance and lifespan of an automatic transmission, which is one of the most expensive parts of a vehicle to replace. However, if you are already experiencing problems with the transmission, a flush would not help in this instance.

The benefits of having a transmission flush performed are:

  • It removes contaminants
    • Cleans out the old fluid, debris and sludge
  • Prevents the transmission from overheating
    • Fresh fluid helps to improve the transmissions cooling efficiency
  • Enhances your vehicles performance by:
    • Smoothing the gear shifts and improving the transmissions responsiveness
  • Extends the life of the transmission
    • Performing a flush helps to reduce wear and the potential for damage over time

It may be time to inquire about having a transmission fluid flush done if:

  •  After checking your fluid, you notice it is dark, dirty, or has a burnt smell
  •  Start to experience difficulty or a delay in shifting gears
  • There are noises such as a whining or clunking while shifting
  • And of course if you’ve reached the manufacturers interval, you should be following the recommended maintenance schedule per the owners manual

Is a transmission flush the same thing and changing the transmission fluid?

They are two different services. Changing the transmission fluid involves replacing only about 50% of the old fluid. On the other hand, flushing the transmission fluid replaces nearly 100% of the fluid and purges any accumulated debris and deposits from the entire transmission. You can anticipate the service taking about 3-4 hours for a trained mechanic to do using a commercial flushing machine.

When it comes to how often a flush should be performed, you should follow the owners manual to see how often the manufacturer recommends the service for your model. The intervals can vary depending on the vehicle and driving habits. Generally, a transmission flush is recommended at every 30k – 60k miles or every 3-5 years.

Because flushing the transmission can dislodge debris that may clog passageways or damage components, it’s possible it can potentially cause harm if the service has not had regular maintenance, is older or has high mileage. It  is also not recommended to have a transmission fluid flush performed if the transmission is already showing signs of being compromised. If you have any concerns, always consult the vehicle’s manual and/or a trusted mechanic.
